A Montgomery County man pleaded guilty Thursday to carjacking and shooting a man in 2024 in Philadelphia, according to prosecutors.
Niyaz Burgess, 20, pleaded guilty to carjacking and using, carrying and discharging a firearm in connection with the incident.
On July 14, 2024, just before 3 a.m., Burgess carjacked and shot a man on Limeklin Pike before driving away in the victim’s car, prosecutors said.
The victim was shot in the abdomen and in the arm, and he suffered significant internal injuries.
The following day, Pennsylvania State troopers found the victim’s crashed and abandoned car on Interstate 95 in Tinicum Township. Troopers secured the car and transferred it to the Philadelphia Police Department for forensic testing.
Evidence revealed Burgess’s fingerprints and palm print on the stolen vehicle, officials said.
Burgess is set to be sentenced on Feb. 15 and faces up to life in prison, five years of supervised release and a $500,000 fine with a mandatory sentence of 10 years in prison.
