What makes this photo important?

This week’s news cycle was tough and relentless. I never say no to a baby animal debut at a zoo as a nice reprieve from the grind of photojournalism in Chicago.

How I got this photo:

It was a field trip day at Brookfield Zoo when I visited to photograph Robin, a 3-month-old Humboldt penguin, who was just introduced to her colony's full habitat earlier this month. There were dozens of giddy children scurrying around me and enjoying the exhibit while I was trying to capture Robin's cuteness. I apologized to kids for planting my feet and staking my claim to a spot where I could see the baby. Then, I tried to work quickly so I could get out of their way.

Technical details:

  • Equipment: Canon EOS R5 with an EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM lens
  • Focal length: 227mm
  • Aperture: f/5.0
  • Exposure: 1/2000
  • ISO: 2500
